As HDD continuously pursue higher TPI and Higher rotational speeds, disturbance such as air turbulence inside the HDD have more significant impact on the suspension behavior and the head positioning capability more than ever before.

In order to facilitate high servo bandwidth, a new suspension design to achieve high resonance frequency and robustness against air turbulence was proposed. NHK Spring spent 3 years on development and in 1999 shipped its first Fuma Suspensions in the fall of 1999.

FUMA, the Chinese characters for which mean magic wind, is a moniker bestowed by NHK Spring personnel. Fuma is an assemblage of several members, replacing the conventional single-unit structure.

Fuma uses members of 100 micron in thickness for its edge and base. The two members are connected by a flat spring thick, at a distance of 0.6mm.

Design Concept

-thicker material, short length and narrow width
-higher first torsion (T1) frequency and robustness

Multi-Piece Structure

-hinge portion (thin & short) and flange portion (thick & short)
-small variation of spring rate
